Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, Goodwin Liu will lead off the distinguished guest speakers for 13 commencements at the university that began May 17.
To Degree Candidates,
It will be Commencement time again soon and I want to offer my congratulations as you and your families prepare to celebrate this wonderful milestone.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of legislation that, while little known to the public, created UC Davis and many other outstanding land-grant universities throughout this nation.
The significance of the Morrill Act, signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, during the height of the Civil War, is worth reflecting on as you enter this exciting new chapter in your lives because I believe it continues to reflect the values of our great university and of our graduates.
The law's goal was to create public universities, accessible to all, in each of the 50 states, as a way of ensuring an educated public that would build a prosperous and just nation.
The education these colleges would provide would also help satisfy people's universal yearning to live useful, productive and meaningful lives.
Public service and the common good are at the core of the land-grant mission, and our UC Davis graduates have always exemplified a willingness to serve more than just their own personal ambitions and goals.
As you prepare to finish your undergraduate work here, you have already demonstrated a commitment to public service and the concept of how our state, nation and world can also benefit from everything you have learned and experienced here. It is an education that will help shape your future and ours, which fills us all with great hope and optimism for our collective futures.
We look forward to your participation in our UC Davis graduation exercises. Please accept my congratulations on your achievement and best wishes for a bright future.
