Eligibility & Registration

Degree candidates must meet certain degree completion requirements in order to be eligible to participate in commencement. For eligibility requirements, go to the Register Online — Students page at Graduate Studies website. The deadline to register and have your name printed in the program is April 11, 2017 and the last day to register for participation is May 12, 2017 by midnight. Participation in commencement is ceremonial. Fianl degree requirements must be met in order to receive a graduate degree from UC Davis.

Doctoral and master’s degree candidates, as well as interested and retired faculty and stage party members, will assemble at 3:00 p.m. in academic dress at Hutchison Field on the UC Davis campus.
Instructions on assembling for lineup will be emailed days before the ceremony.

Caps, gowns and hoods are available at the UC Davis Stores in the Memorial Union. See Academic Dress under General Information.

Order of Procession

All degree candidates and participating faculty will enter the Pavilion using the south doors. Once candidates are assembled then the stage party, led by the marshal, enters the Pavilion and processes onto the stage. The marshal formally proclaims the convening of the commencement ceremony.

The ceremony will last approximately three hours and includes the processional, short addresses by distinguished speakers, the conferring of degrees and the recessional.

At the appropriate time in the program, the marshal or dean will ask each group of candidates to rise. After the degree is conferred, the marshal or dean will direct the graduates to come forward.

As candidates move across the stage, they will present their pre-recorded name cards. The student's name and graduate program wil be announced to the audience and displayed on the screen when the card is scanned by the staff on stage. Candidates will then receive scrolls and university pins from the conferring officers, cross and exit the stage, have their photograph taken and return to their seats.

Candidates for the doctoral degree will also be escorted to the stage by their chosen faculty presenter. The candidates will be presented to the dean and then be invested with the hood.

The ceremony concludes with a recessional by the stage party and faculty, followed by the graduates. Degree recipients and faculty will exit the Pavilion using the south doors. The audience will remain standing at their seats until the graduates have exited.

See Photographs under General Information.

Gown and Hood Return

To avoid a late-return charge, gowns and hoods must be returned immediately following the ceremony or to the UC Davis Bookstore no later than Monday, June 12, 2017.

Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be served on the south side of the Pavilion for graduates and their families and friends.
